Selank: Relieving anxiety without benzo side effects? The Russian peptide fact-checked

July 5, 2026

Becoming calmer without being tired, dependent or foggy: that is the promise of Selank, a peptide from Moscow taken as a nasal spray. For a scene peptide it has an unusual amount of human data, though almost all of it from Russia.

What it is about

Selank is modeled on tuftsin, a tiny fragment of an antibody, and made more stable by an attached protective building block. It comes from the same Moscow institute as Semax: one is meant to make you alert, Selank is meant to calm. Via the nasal mucosa it travels a short route toward the brain, bypassing the stomach, which otherwise breaks down peptides. The episode explains the two speeds of its effect, fast via the GABA system and slow via the growth factor BDNF, and goes through the clinical comparisons with benzodiazepines. The conclusion is a peptide with real human data in anxiety patients whose independent confirmation outside Russia is still pending.

Key points

  • In Russia, Selank is an approved medicine and has been studied in humans with generalized anxiety and with a kind of exhaustion-related nervousness.
  • In comparisons with classic sedatives, including a strong benzodiazepine, Selank achieved a comparable reduction in anxiety, without sedation and without muscle relaxation.
  • It is also reported that tolerance, dependence and withdrawal did not occur, exactly the weaknesses that make benzodiazepines so difficult in everyday life.
  • In a study with 70 patients, the combination of Selank and a benzodiazepine even performed better and brought fewer side effects.
  • The fast effect is said to run via the GABA system, the brain’s brake, and to set in after minutes; the slow one via BDNF, which builds up over days to weeks.
  • Besides relieving anxiety, some studies report a slightly mood-lifting effect, and involvement of serotonin is discussed; through the tuftsin root, immune effects are also described.
  • Anecdotal report: in the scene, Selank is combined with its sister peptide Semax, Semax for focus, Selank for calm; there are no clean data on this stack.

Where the data stop

The human data are solid for a peptide of this kind, but almost all come from Russia and have hardly been independently replicated; large Western studies are missing, as of July 2026. The good results concern people with anxiety disorders. For the wish of healthy people under stress to be somewhat calmer and clearer, the evidence is considerably thinner. Long-term safety with continuous use is not well studied either; so far, mainly mild irritation of the nose has been reported, occasionally tiredness or headache.

In Germany, Selank is not approved as a medicine, as of July 2026, and is traded as research material. Nobody has pharmaceutically tested what is in the vial. Anyone suffering from anxiety should discuss it with a physician.
