Sermorelin & tesamorelin: the GHRH classics fact-checked
August 20, 2026
Sermorelin and tesamorelin tell the pituitary gland the same thing: release growth hormone. One became the entry-level peptide of American anti-aging clinics, the other is an approved medicine against the body’s most dangerous fat.
What it is about
Both are copies of GHRH, the body’s own command from the hypothalamus, which survives only minutes in the blood. Sermorelin is the short, active piece of it, was formerly a medicine for children with growth hormone deficiency and is today produced in US compounding pharmacies. It is considered mild and physiological because it amplifies the natural pulses and preserves the feedback loop. Tesamorelin is the complete, stabilized version, with strong studies against visceral fat and liver fat. The episode compares the two and explains why the scene combines GHRH with GHRP and how the effect is measured. At the end stand a gentle all-rounder and a proven but expensive specialist.
Key points
- The body’s own GHRH has 44 amino acids; sermorelin consists of the first 29, which carry the full signaling effect.
- Sermorelin was approved as Geref for children with growth hormone deficiency; the brand product was discontinued in 2008 for commercial reasons, not because of safety problems.
- Mod GRF 1-29 is chemically a tuned sermorelin: the same 29 building blocks, 4 of them exchanged for greater stability.
- In the approval study by Falutz and colleagues, New England Journal of Medicine 2007, with more than 400 patients, visceral fat fell by a good 15 percent in 26 weeks, a net difference of around 20 percent compared with placebo.
- Stanley and colleagues showed in Lancet HIV in 2019 that tesamorelin reduced liver fat by more than a third and slowed the progression of liver fibrosis.
- As a report: users first notice deeper sleep and faster recovery; objectively, a moderately rising IGF-1 level shows that the signal is getting through.
Where the data stop
Tesamorelin is approved by the FDA as Egrifta only for abdominal fat accumulation in HIV patients on antiviral therapy. The effect lasts as long as the injections continue and disappears after stopping. Injection-site reactions, water retention and joint aches are common, and blood sugar can also rise, which is why HbA1c belongs in the monitoring. For sermorelin in anti-aging use, the episode cites reports but no studies.
Active cancer is a hard stop sign; caution applies in diabetes and during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and all GH secretagogues are banned in competitive sport. Sermorelin is no longer approved in Germany, as of August 2026; both circulate on the grey market with the familiar purity risks.
