MK-677 (Ibutamoren): Growth hormone from a tablet fact-checked
July 5, 2026
Almost all agents that raise growth hormone are injected; MK-677 is a tablet. That makes it a favorite of many biohackers who want deeper sleep and better recovery. The episode shows what the studies deliver and where the heart and blood sugar demand respect.
What it is about
MK-677, also called ibutamoren, is a growth hormone secretagogue: it gets the body to release its own growth hormone instead of supplying it from outside. To do this it activates the ghrelin receptor, which also controls hunger, and the release continues to follow the body’s own waves. It was developed at Merck as an oral hope against frailty and the loss of muscle and bone in old age, but it was never approved. The episode goes through what users report, what a study in older adults showed, which warning signal emerged and why more IGF-1 is not automatically better from a longevity perspective. The conclusion is a convenient, noticeable route to the growth hormone axis that calls for attention to the heart and blood sugar.
Key points
- In a 2008 study by Nass and colleagues, MK-677 raised growth hormone and IGF-1 in older adults to the level of younger people and increased lean mass over 1 year.
- Anecdotal report: users most often describe deeper sleep with more dream phases; this fits with growth hormone being released mainly during deep sleep.
- Anecdotal report: in addition, faster recovery, better skin, stronger hair and nails and in some cases fewer joint complaints; these effects tend to take a few weeks.
- A single dose keeps the axis raised for about a day, without injection and without refrigeration: this simplicity is the main reason for MK-677’s popularity.
- Because MK-677 acts on the hunger receptor, it increases appetite: an advantage in a building phase, more of an opponent in a strict diet.
- In another study, more cases of heart failure occurred in the MK-677 group; water retention and higher blood sugar can also occur.
- Many long-lived people tend to have moderate IGF-1 levels; in longevity research, permanently very high levels are not considered automatically life-extending.
Where the data stop
The Nass study shows that MK-677 reliably raises the axis. However, the higher lean mass did not translate into a clear functional benefit, and together with the side effects this was never enough for approval. As of July 2026, MK-677 is not approved as a medicine anywhere; in the scene it comes as a research chemical from the gray market, where the purity of a tablet cannot be recognized. It is banned in sport.
Water retention, rising blood sugar and the heart failure signal belong in an honest assessment. For anyone who already has heart or blood sugar problems, MK-677 is probably not the right choice, and medical advice is especially important here. Users report courses with breaks instead of continuous use and keeping an eye on blood sugar and blood pressure; this is practice from the scene, not a tested recommendation.
