Comparison

NMN vs. NAD+ infusion

Swallowing NMN or NAD+ into the vein – what is proven in humans?

The short answer

Both aim to raise NAD+ levels, and for NMN this has been shown in humans: in a double-blind trial NAD+ in the blood rose, but the same trial's primary endpoint failed. Two meta-analyses found no effects on muscle function or metabolism. In 2026 the EFSA assessed only safety, and EU authorization is still pending. The infusion has less behind it: infused NAD+ disappeared completely from plasma within the first 2 hours, there is no controlled study for energy, focus or anti-aging, and all 6 recipients in a customer analysis had moderate to severe symptoms during the infusion. The strongest signal is a disease finding in 180 heart failure patients in China. There is no direct comparison between NMN and NAD+ infusion.

BK-Score in direct comparison – each axis rates the state of knowledge, not the substance.

Human evidenceHow much and how good the data in humans are 5 3 NMN better studied

“Track record of use” measures how long and how widely something has been used in humans – not whether it works. The BK-Score is a subjective assessment by Biohacking Kompakt based on published scoring rules (German). It is not a scientific rating, not the consensus of a professional society and not a medical recommendation.

Why these numbers

NMN

In humans there are now 15 small randomized trials lasting 2 to 24 weeks; a meta-analysis (Yang 2026) finds no effects on weight, blood sugar, blood lipids or blood pressure, and another finds none on muscle function. Outcome data are missing; the NAD pathway is plausible, but the increase in tissue is poorly documented. Safety data are short-term only – and hardly any longevity product is more overhyped.

NAD+ infusion

Evidence 3: for the advertised purposes of energy, focus and anti-aging there is no controlled study; a 2026 systematic review found no outcome study on NAD+ given by vein or muscle. In humans there is a pilot study with 11 men (Grant 2019), a randomized comparison published as a manufacturer-funded preprint (Hawkins 2024) and a customer analysis with 14 people (Reyna 2026); in addition, there is a randomized trial with 180 heart failure patients from China in which ejection fraction after 1 month rose more, to 45.44 versus 42.44 percent (Yu 2026) – a disease finding at a single centre with an ultrasound endpoint. Mechanism 3: the biology of NAD+ is well understood, but infused NAD+ disappeared completely from plasma within the first 2 hours, and in whole blood it rose by 2 percent only after 24 hours; whether it reaches the target cells has not been measured. Safety 3: only short-term data from small studies; all 6 NAD+ recipients in the customer analysis had moderate to severe symptoms during the infusion, and in the preprint neutrophils rose. Hype 2, because providers advertise cell repair and rejuvenation, for which there are no human data. Application 4: widespread in practices and wellness centres without an approved indication in the EU and the USA; registered as a medicine only in China.

Frequently asked questions

Is an NAD+ infusion better than NMN?

That has not been shown, and no study compares the two directly. Oral precursors such as NMN reliably raise NAD+ in the blood in studies. Infused NAD+, by contrast, is broken down quickly in the blood; in Hawkins 2024 it rose in whole blood only after 24 hours, by 2 percent, while intravenous nicotinamide riboside raised the level by up to 20.7 percent. That paper is a manufacturer-funded preprint that has not been peer-reviewed.

Do NMN or NAD+ infusions work against ageing?

Neither has been shown to in humans. For NMN there is no randomized trial with a hard endpoint such as mortality or dementia; the largest registered trials, with 200 and 138 participants, are still running. For the infusion, a 2026 systematic review of 33 human intervention studies found not a single one testing NAD+ by vein or muscle against ageing or wellness endpoints. For both, the idea rests on animal studies and the biology of NAD+.

What are the side effects of NMN and NAD+ infusion?

NMN is considered well tolerated in the short term; liver values remained unremarkable in the analysis of 15 trials. An open question is a signal concerning the breakdown product 4PY, which was linked to major cardiovascular events in observational data (HR 1.89), without proof of cause and effect. For the infusion, symptoms during administration are well documented: chest pressure, nausea, abdominal cramps, palpitations. In one preprint, neutrophils rose afterwards. Long-term data are missing for both.

Are NMN and NAD+ infusions approved in the EU?

Neither is. In 2026 the EFSA classified beta-NMN as safe as a novel food for adults, excluding pregnant and breastfeeding women; the European Commission's decision is still pending, and efficacy was not assessed. There is no authorized NAD+ medicine in the EU, and practices offer the infusion without an approved indication. For competitive athletes, the 2026 WADA list prohibits infusions of more than 100 millilitres within 12 hours outside hospital treatment.
