Comparison
Collagen peptides vs. hyaluronic acid
Collagen or hyaluronic acid – which does more for the skin?
The short answer
Both have human studies, and both show the same methodological pattern: short durations of eight to twelve weeks, cosmetic measurement methods instead of clinical endpoints, and a large share of the studies co-funded by raw material manufacturers. For collagen peptides the body of studies is somewhat broader; for oral hyaluronic acid, the most recent study included 150 healthy adults. Mechanistically, for both it remains open how the swallowed molecule is supposed to act in the skin after being broken down in the gut – it is explained by a stimulated synthesis in the body, but that has not been proven.

“Track record of use” measures how long and how widely something has been used in humans – not whether it works. The BK-Score is a subjective assessment by Biohacking Kompakt based on published scoring rules. It is not a scientific rating, not the consensus of a professional society and not a medical recommendation.
Why these numbers
Collagen peptides
There are RCTs on skin moisture and joint complaints, but they are small and mostly manufacturer-funded. The mechanism remains disputed because collagen, like any protein, is digested. Very heavily advertised.
Hyaluronic acid
There are human data, but you need to know where they come from: several RCTs, most recently with 150 healthy adults (Sci Rep 2025), show improvements in skin moisture, elasticity and wrinkle depth after 8 to 12 weeks – measured with cosmetic surrogate methods, and many of these studies are co-funded by raw material manufacturers. Mechanistically, it remains open how a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide is supposed to act in the skin after being broken down in the gut; it is explained by a stimulated synthesis in the body, but that has not been proven in humans.
Frequently asked questions
Why is manufacturer funding a problem?
It does not make a study wrong, but it shifts the probabilities: studies with manufacturer involvement systematically report positive results more often. When an entire field is predominantly funded this way, you should read the overall effect more cautiously than the individual study.
What does cosmetic surrogate marker mean?
Skin moisture, elasticity and wrinkle depth are measured with devices – not whether someone ends up looking younger or being healthier. These are valid measurements, but they answer a narrower question than the advertising suggests.
Does hyaluronic acid also work for the joints?
Injection into the joint is an established, if disputed, treatment with its own body of studies. Oral intake for the joints should not be confused with it – the data for that are considerably thinner.
