Ready-made nootropic blends
Stress & mind · Nootropic stacks, brain supplements, focus capsules; examples: Alpha Brain, Mind Lab Pro, Qualia Mind
Ready-made nootropic blends combine choline sources, plant extracts, amino acids and vitamins in one capsule and promise better memory and more focus. For well-known products such as Alpha Brain and Mind Lab Pro, there is one study each with better memory scores and one each without a difference in performance; the study on Qualia Mind is unpublished. The brands appear here only as examples of the state of the research; what the individual ingredients can do is described on their own pages.
What ready-made nootropic blends are
This means dietary supplements that combine several substances said to enhance mental performance in a fixed formula. Typical ingredients are citicoline, alpha-GPC, bacopa, L-theanine, phosphatidylserine, tyrosine, rhodiola, lion’s mane, often B vitamins as well and sometimes caffeine. Mind Lab Pro contains eleven ingredients; according to one study, Alpha Brain contains, among others, alpha-GPC, tyrosine, bacopa, phosphatidylserine, cat’s claw, pterostilbene and vinpocetine.
What is rated is the state of knowledge on the blends as a whole. For individual ingredients it is in some cases considerably better; the pages on them are linked. A self-assembled combination is described in the tip on the nootropic starter stack.
How they are supposed to work
The idea is a bundle of different pathways: choline sources are meant to support the messenger substance acetylcholine, bacopa memory over weeks, L-theanine to dampen tension, tyrosine to secure the formation of dopamine under stress, caffeine to provide short-term alertness. The manufacturers rely on these effects complementing each other.
This has not been tested. None of the product studies compared which ingredient contributes anything and in what amount. In addition, the amounts are in some cases below those of the single-ingredient studies: Mind Lab Pro contains 150 mg bacopa, 100 mg L-theanine and 50 mg rhodiola per serving, whereas these substances were studied individually at 300 to 600 mg, 200 to 400 mg and 144 to 400 mg per day. Results for the individual substances therefore cannot be transferred to the blend, and a result for the blend says nothing about a single ingredient.
What is well supported
- Individual controlled studies with a positive memory finding. After 6 weeks, Alpha Brain improved delayed word recall and executive functions compared with placebo in 63 healthy young adults. After 30 days, Mind Lab Pro performed better than the control group on immediate and delayed recall.
- A short-term effect with caffeinated blends. A powder blend containing caffeine, tyrosine, citicoline, alpha-GPC, L-theanine and other substances improved reaction time in several tests 30 minutes after intake, with effect sizes of 0.4 to 0.6, compared with placebo in a triple-blind crossover trial.
- No abnormalities over weeks. In the soldier study on Alpha Brain, no side effects were reported or observed over 30 days; in the 60-day study on Mind Lab Pro, participants reported none. This applies to small groups and short periods.
What the studies show
Alpha Brain: Solomon 2016 and Barringer 2018
In the first study, 63 healthy adults aged 18 to 35 first completed 2 weeks on placebo, then 6 weeks on Alpha Brain or new placebo, double-blind. Alpha Brain was better on delayed word recall and executive functions; the authors call it the first randomized study on the product and call for further studies. The second study gave 43 soldiers Alpha Brain or placebo for 30 days and measured hits and reaction time during shooting training. There was no difference; both groups improved over time. This study was funded by the manufacturer Onnit.
Mind Lab Pro: Abbott-Imboden 2023 and O’Reilly 2025
In the first study, 49 healthy adults aged 20 to 68 took Mind Lab Pro or placebo for 30 days. The allocation was unbalanced, 36 versus 13 people, and pseudo-randomized according to the authors. The Mind Lab Pro group improved in all memory tests, the control group in two; between the groups, immediate recall (p = 0.005) and delayed recall (p = 0.034) differed. In the second study by the same research group, randomized and double-blind, participants took the product for 60 days. Accuracy and reaction time on a decision task did not improve; changes were found in EEG parameters whose significance is open. It was funded by the Performance Lab Group.
Qualia Mind: registered, completed, unpublished
The ClinicalTrials.gov registry lists a randomized, double-blind crossover study with 60 participants aged 18 to 75, sponsor Neurohacker Collective, primary outcome mental performance after 5 days. It has been completed since September 2020. Results are neither in the registry nor was a publication found during the research.
Medrano 2022: powder blend with caffeine
In 26 young adults, a powder blend (Evo-Gamers) was tested once against placebo, triple-blind in a crossover design. Besides caffeine, it contained tyrosine, acetyl-L-carnitine, citicoline, alpha-GPC, taurine, L-theanine, mango leaf extract and Huperzia extract. After 30 minutes, reaction times were shorter in several tests; verbal fluency, motivation and anxiety were unchanged. The study was funded by the manufacturer. How much of this is due to the caffeine alone cannot be determined from the design.
Where the data stop
- A stable benefit for healthy people. There are one or two small studies per product, which partly contradict each other. Replications by independent groups are missing.
- Which ingredient has an effect. No product study compared individual substances or partial combinations. With caffeinated blends, caffeine alone can explain a short-term effect.
- Independence. Several studies were funded by manufacturers or their associates; for Qualia Mind, published results are missing.
- Long-term use. The longest product study ran for 60 days. There are no data over months or years.
Status, approval and legal
Ready-made nootropic blends are sold as dietary supplements and are not tested for efficacy by the authorities before sale. Whether a particular blend may legally be marketed in Germany depends on each individual ingredient. Some are unproblematic; for others, limits apply: citicoline is authorized in the EU as a novel food at no more than 500 mg per day in dietary supplements, and alpha-GPC requires novel food authorization.
Some ingredients found in US products may not be marketed as dietary supplements in Germany: vinpocetine is prescription-only here, and huperzine A is objected to by the food control authorities. A product sold in the US is therefore not automatically permitted here.
Safety
In the soldier study on Alpha Brain, no side effects were reported or observed over 30 days; in the 60-day study on Mind Lab Pro, participants reported none. These are small groups over short periods. The risk profile of a blend results from its ingredients: caffeine, vinpocetine and huperzine A have their own risks, described on their pages.
Anyone who takes medication, is pregnant or is breastfeeding should go through the ingredient list with a physician or pharmacy. Possible interactions are listed for the individual substances, not under the brand name.

Evidence 4, because for the well-known blends there are one or two small controlled studies each, which contradict each other: Alpha Brain improved delayed word recall in 63 young adults (Solomon 2016), but did nothing compared with placebo in 43 soldiers (Barringer 2018); Mind Lab Pro performed better on recall in a pseudo-randomized study with 36 versus 13 people (Abbott-Imboden 2023), but not on accuracy and reaction time after 60 days (O’Reilly 2025); the study on Qualia Mind has been completed since 2020 and is unpublished (NCT04389723). Mechanism 4, because the individual substances have their own pathways, some of them demonstrated in humans, but for the blends it has never been shown which ingredient contributes anything and in what amount. Safety 4, because only short-term data over 30 to 60 days in small groups are available; the risk profile results from the individual substances, including prescription-only ones such as vinpocetine. Hype 3, because the blends are marketed as memory and focus enhancers for healthy people, while only individual small, mostly manufacturer-funded studies with mixed results are available for this. Use 5, because the products have been sold widely for years, but without regulatory review of the blend. Direction mixed: individual positive memory findings, alongside studies without a difference in performance.
The score rates the state of knowledge, not the substance. “Safety data 9” means well studied – not harmless. “Track record of use 9” means used long and widely – that is not proof of efficacy.

Frequently asked questions about ready-made nootropic blends
Do nootropic blends such as Alpha Brain or Mind Lab Pro work?
The evidence is thin and mixed. For both products, there is one small study each with better memory scores compared with placebo and one study each in which performance did not differ from placebo. Independent replications are missing.
Is there a study on Qualia Mind?
A randomized, double-blind crossover study with 60 participants is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov and has been completed since 2020. Results have neither been entered in the registry nor was a publication found during the research.
Are ready-made blends better than individual substances?
That has not been studied. None of the product studies compared the blend with its individual substances. Individual ingredients such as bacopa or L-theanine with caffeine are better studied than the blends, but often in larger amounts than those contained in ready-made products.
Who paid for the studies?
The soldier study on Alpha Brain was funded by the manufacturer Onnit, the 60-day study on Mind Lab Pro by the Performance Lab Group, and the study on the powder blend Evo-Gamers by its manufacturer. The study on Qualia Mind ran under the sponsor Neurohacker Collective.
Are nootropic blends permitted in Germany?
That depends on the ingredients. Many blends are on the market as dietary supplements. Some ingredients from US products, such as vinpocetine, prescription-only here, or huperzine A, may not be marketed as dietary supplements in Germany or are objected to by the authorities.
