Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: the pressure chamber fact-checked
September 8, 2026
A therapy in which you do nothing but breathe — and Israeli researchers report longer telomeres. The episode separates established pressure-chamber medicine from the longevity bet and explains why the chamber in a studio delivers a completely different dose.
What it is about
Under overpressure and with pure oxygen, additional oxygen dissolves physically in the blood plasma; the plasma itself becomes a carrier and thus also reaches tissues where blood flow is weak. That is the physics behind hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and it has been established medicine for decades — for carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, chronic wounds and radiation damage. The episode shows how a longevity trend grew out of this serious foundation, explains the hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox as the mechanism of action and puts the much-cited Israeli data into context. Then comes the episode’s most important consumer note: the published effects come from clinical chambers, not from the mild soft chambers of the studio market.
Key points
- With healthy lungs, haemoglobin is already more than 95 percent saturated anyway; the gain in the chamber comes from oxygen physically dissolved in the blood plasma.
- At 2 to 3 atmospheres of pressure and 100 percent oxygen, 10 to 15 times the normal amount dissolves there.
- In the Israeli study published in 2020, healthy older adults completed 60 sessions in 3 months — an extremely intensive volume for a longevity protocol.
- Reported were telomeres in blood cells that lengthened by around 20 percent, and senescent cells that declined by up to one third.
- A session lasts 60 to 90 minutes; longevity protocols modelled on the Israeli example comprise 40 to 60 sessions.
- At 120 to 250 euros per session, a full protocol ends up in the high four- to five-figure range.
- Studio and home chambers often work with 1.3 to 1.5 ATA and enriched air — below 1.5 ATA, according to the episode, that is wellness, not a study dose.
Where the data stop
The Israeli data are real, published human data from a reputable centre and yet not proof: small numbers of participants, partly without a control group, an extremely intensive protocol, and telomere measurements in blood cells are considered notoriously shaky. Independent replication is still pending. For the third ring, the dream of rejuvenating telomeres in healthy people, it therefore remains a bet on young data.
The second break is the dose: what is sold for studios and living rooms is physically something different from the clinical chamber the studies come from — the results cannot be transferred to it. And the risks are real, if manageable: middle-ear barotrauma is the most common problem, temporary short-sightedness after many sessions is documented, oxygen seizures at high pressures are rare but serious. Untreated pneumothorax is an absolute stop sign.
